Goodbye July…Thanks For The Memories

July 31, 2008

We have been losing daylight now for over a month and starting today, the last day of July, our average temperatures start to fall.  Can lake effect snow be far away?  Sorry…just joshing you a bit.

Friday looks to be the best day of the next three.  It will be humid but we should have at least partly sunny skies and for 95% of the area, it will be rain-free.  I can’t rule out an isolated shower or t-storm Friday simply because we have an upper level low still lurking over us.

There is a front coming Saturday so showers are pretty close to a lock for part of the day with high temps around 75.  Sunday will feature some sun through the clouds but scattered showers will dot the area.  Sunday we should hit the mid 70s.

Join me at 6pm, 10pm, 10:30pm and 11pm for all the details.

Weekend July 31-August 3

July 31, 2008

The summer is half-over. Have you gotten out of the house? Can you break away form Lawn Work and those obligatory, pesky summer projects?

The North Country isn’t the sleepy little region it used to be. There is a ton of events throughout the three county area. Too many to highlight here, but I am going to pick a few.

I thought I would break them up according to locale this weekend.

chess-427x338.jpgFARMER’S MARKET

Sponsored by Alex Bay Chamber of Commerce, 9 am - 3pm Fridays adjacent to Kinney Drugs.

ADAMS/ADAMS CENTER

BARGAIN DAYS - garagesale.jpg

Okay, I admit this is where you will find me on Saturday morning, slurping coffee and going from sale to sale. Of all the community wide garage sales that happen in the North Country, the Adams/Adams Center/South Jefferson Sale is probably the biggest.

If you are a bargain hunter, people watcher or have been looking for years for that elusive Slim Whitman record on vinyl then I will see you at one of the South Jeff communities this Saturday AM.

Look for me, I will be with my sister, who will be going over linen with a critical eye while I paw at books and vintage bar glassware.

One year I snagged a huge entertainment center for $7, yes I said $7, even though I had no truck to bring it home with. Another time I snatched an Edith Wharton First Edition garage-sale-booty.jpgHardcover for .25, it is worth over $50.00. Such a Deal!

To accommodate the voracious appetites that arise from manic shoppers, the South Jefferson Historical society will host a Chicken Barbeque.

THIS EVENT is FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. Call 583-5459 for details.

Thursday’s Briefing: The Reviews Are In

July 31, 2008

Governor David Paterson took a bold step this week.  He declared the state to be in a recession, with its budget falling deeper into a dark pit of debt.  He challenged — nicely — state lawmakers to match the cuts he was making.  How’s his message going over?

So the Governor’s plan is out.

There’s praise — cautious, but praise nonetheless — from the two other members of Three Men In A Room.

One of them, though, still wants higher taxes to fill the debt hole.

My Head Is Exploding Dep’t: Did you ever think the state Conservative Party would endorse a move from a Democratic governor?

Opinions Are Like Noses - Everybody’s Got One:

Fiscal analyst E.J. McMahon studies the numbers and offers a backhanded compliment:

“Paterson, by contrast, has been willing to recognize that the state’s own spending habits are the root of the problem. Talk is still cheap at this stage, but it’s better than nothing.”

The New York Times:  Nice talk, but…

“…if the new governor really wants to put the state’s fiscal house in order, he is going to have to get a lot tougher with his old friends in Albany.”

Newsday finds the Gov. taking charge:

Gov. David Paterson was sworn in in March, but Tuesday evening he truly became the governor of New York. With his live, televised address about the poor state of the state’s finances - and subsequent talk to state agencies Wednesday - Paterson demonstrated leadership and originality in trying to head off a bigger crisis. Whether New York’s band of the self-interested will follow remains to be seen.

State workers, some of whom may lose their jobs:

“I think you gotta spend money to make money,” [one worker] said. ” … The drastic cuts he’s talking about — in the long run, you’re selling yourself short.”

Last Word Dep’t:

Feedback: President Bush Announces Time Reduction For Troop Deployment

July 31, 2008

United States combat tours will be cut back to one year, according to comments made by President Bush earlier today.

That announcement could bring small relief to U.S. soldiers and their families, who were facing 15 month tours.

The 3rd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum will most likely be affected by the announcement since it is preparing for deployment to Iraq in January.

President Bush said it was his hope that this reduction would relieve some of the burden on troops.

According to local leaders, 15 months in a war zone, versus the original 12 months, can create hardships for the soldier and the families left behind.

keith.jpgThe North Country economy was also in mind, since many families return to their original homes to be closer to others.

When 15 month deployments were announced last year, the number of families coming to Fort Drum with their soldier dropped 13 percent.

Fort Drum Liaison Keith Caughlin says that shorter deployments could keep a soldier’s family in the North Country during deployment and could help the local housing market as well.

Johnny Is In The Dog House To Help The SPCA

July 31, 2008

The Border 106.7’s radio personality Johnny Spezzano is in the dog house.

And that dog house is 70 feet in the air.

spezzano.jpgSpezzano is attempting to raise $70,000 to help the Jefferson County SPCA raise enough funds for a new building to house the animals.

The radio man was hoisted 70 feet in the air yesterday and for every $1,000 raised, Johnny is lowered one foot.

Those interested in donating to the cause can visit johnnysinthedoghouse.com or go to the SPCA on Water Street.

Johnny spoke to Jeff Cole this morning and gave an update on where he was and how the fund raiser was going:
