According to a press release, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has earmarked over a half million dollars to help eradicate non-native, invasive species.
Known as the Terrestrial Invasive Species Eradication grants, the money will be used to fight hogweed, mile-a-minute weed, pale swallow-wort and other threats to the New York State area.
In Jefferson County, the town of Cape Vincent will receive $30,000 to remove hogweed and pale swallow-wort from several sites in the town.
Also, the Central and Western New York Chapter of The Nature Conservancy will receive $7,519 to battle buckthorn, bush honeysuckle, garlic mustard, and pale swallow-wort at the Chamount Barrens Preserve.
The program is one of the first initiatives headed by the new Invasive Species Council.
