4,000 U.S. Soldiers, 108 Fort Drum Troops Killed In Iraq
Days after the 5th anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, a bloody milestone has been reached.
Four U.S. soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad, bringing the number of American deaths in the Iraq war to at least 4,000.
The news obviously hit close to home because of Fort Drum.
According to the local post, 108 of those 4,000 casualties were soldiers with the 10th Mountain Division.
“I feel very sorry for the families. I feel sorry for the soldiers, both the men and the women who are undergoing all this and who have had to suffer all this pain and loss,” said north country resident Nancy Coburn.
Just last week, President bush said while the cost of the war has been high, the sacrifice is worth it in the end.
There are currently 158,000 soldiers serving in Iraq, including Fort Drum’s 1st Brigade Combat Team.
Fort Drum Headquarters is scheduled to deploy in May.
“I think it’s a very sad thing and that we’re really not fighting for this country anymore. We’re just taking care of Iraq,” said north country resident Lillian Dawley.
