FUNERAL SERVICES FOR 72 YEAR OLD RICHARD “DICK” KING,  OF 296 OLD MARKET ROAD NORFOLK, WILL BE AT 1P.M. MONDAY AT THE CHURCH OF THE VISITATION IN NORFOLK, WITH REV. ANDREW AMYOT,PASTOR, PRESDING .

SPRING BURIAL WILL BE IN THE VISITATION CEMETERY. 

MR. KING DIED THURSDAY  AT CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL. 

CALLING HOURS WILL BE HELD FROM 7P.M. TO 9P.M. ON SATURDAY, AND 2-4 AND 7-9 PM ON SUNDAY AT THE BUCK FUNERAL HOME IN NORWOOD. 

MR. KING WAS A NYS ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION OFFICER FOR 30 YEARS, HE RETIRED AS AN LIEUTENANT.

HE SERVED FIVE YEARS AS THE NORFOLK CHIEF OF POLICE RETIRING IN 1995.

MR. KING WAS BORN NOVEMBER 22, 1935 IN NORWOOD, THE SON OF KENNETH AND DORIS  BOCKUS KING, HE GRADUATED FROM NORWOOD-NORFOLK CENTRAL SCHOOL IN 1955. 

HE JOINED THE U.S. ARMY AND SERVED IN GERMANY. 

HE MARRIED ALICE JOAN DAVEY ON MAY 24,1958. 

SURVIVING BESIDES HIS WIFE ARE TWO SONS MATTHEW AND HIS COMPANION KAREN SALO, ORANGE, VIRGINIA AND KENNETH AND HIS COMPANION ALICE DAVID, RICHMOND, VA. AND FOUR DAUGHTERS MRS. ALAN AND LISA MILLS, BOONVILLE,  LORRAINE “CURLY” KING, NORFOLK , MRS. TONY AND JENNIFER BAILEY, MALONE NY, AND MRS JOSEPH AND MARY LoTEMPLIO, MORRISONVILLE, NY, 11 GRANDCHILDREN AND 2 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.  TWO BROTHERS BERNARD KING OF NORFOLK, NY AND LLOYD KING OF NORFOLK, NY.  THREE SISTERS MRS. BEVERLY AVADIKIAN POTSDAM, NY, MRS. DONALD DAWN LaBARGE NORFOLK, NY, AND MRS. DALE RITA LaVIGNE NORFOLK, NY. 

   

HE WAS A COMMUNICANT OF THE CHURCH OF THE VISITATION AND SERVES AS AN R.C.I.A. CATHICIST. 

MR. KING LOVED HUNTING AND FISHING AND BEING IN THE WOODS.  HE ALSO ENJOYED POETRY AND MUSIC. 

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIAL DONATIONS CAN BE MADE TO THE NORFOLK RESCUE SQUAD OR TO THE CHURCH OF THE VISITATION.

ARRANGEMENTS ARE WITH THE BUCK FUNERAL HOME IN NORWOOD.   

Catherine A. Mono, 78, Carthage

Catherine A. “ Cassie “ Mono, 78, of 38750 Route 3, died Saturday evening, March 29, at Carthage Area Hospital where she had been a patient for two days.

0330monoobit.jpg Born Aug. 30, 1929, in Hermon, the daughter of the late Alvin and the late Nora Sullivan Hamilton, she attended school in Carthage.

She married David A. Mono Sr. on March 14, 1948, in Carthage. The couple just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She was a waitress at the Superior Restaurant in Carthage. She worked for over 40 years and retired in 1990.

Mrs. Mono was a member of St. James Church, Carthage.

Surviving are her husband David A. Mono Sr., Carthage; two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Robert Smith, Calcium, and Tina A. and Jeffrey Hinkley, Malden, Mass., two sons, Phillip Mono, Okla., and David A. Mono Jr., Carthage; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The last of 16 children, Mrs. Mono is predeceased by 7 brothers and 8 sisters.

A memorial service at St. James Catholic Church will be held at a time and date to be announced later in the Spring. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.

Lois Lehman, 83, Lowville

March 31, 2008

N. Lois Lehman, 83, of 8671 Route 812, died Saturday evening at Lewis County General Hospital where she had been a patient since March 11.

Born July 23, 1924, in Lowville, the daughter of Hawley and Florence Atwell Weller, she graduated from Lowville Academy.

She married Gerald G. Lehman on June 19, 1946, at the Lowville Methodist Church with the Rev. George Fraser officiating.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed at the Black River Bank in Lowville. After her marriage, she was a homemaker, helped with the operation of the family farm and served as secretary for 24 years for her husband while he was Town of New Bremen supervisor.

Surviving are her husband of Lowville; a son and his wife, Donald and Doris, Lowville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Hodel, Inlet and Camp Verde, Ariz., and Carol and Richard Tiffany, Croghan; a brother, Richard Weller, Lowville; seven grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, nieces nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Adirondack Funeral Home, Main St., Croghan, with the ministry of the Croghan Apostolic Christian Church officiating. Spring burial will be in the Croghan Apostolic Christian Cemetery. A calling hour will be observed noon to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral.

Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, N.Y. 13327.

Polly A. Finn, 63, Lowville

Polly A. Finn, 63, of Jefferson Street, died Saturday morning, March 29, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare where she has been a patient.

0330finnobit.jpg Born March 8, 1945, in Harrisville, the daughter of Edward C. and Helen D. Hathway Jenack, she graduated from Harrisville Central School and nurse’s aide training at Lewis County General Hospital.

She worked first for the nurse’s office at Lowville Academy, and then went to work for Niagara Mohawk in Lowville, Carthage, and Watertown office where she retired. There she was the mail courier for the different locations. She retired as a custodian.

She married Edward J. “Punky’ Finn on Sept. 12, 1964, in Harrisville, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. Kelley officiating. Mr. Finn is retired from the state Department of Transportation in Lowville.

Surviving are her husband, “Punky” of Lowville; her three children, Bridget E. Boliver, Lowville; Brian E. and his wife Christine Finn of Lowville; Russell J. “Rusty” and Amber Finn, St. Johnsbury, Vt.; her mother, Helen D. Jenack, Harrisville; six grandchildren, Matthew R. Scott, Cole E. Boliver, Chelsea M. Finn, Emily A. Finn, Brianna E. Finn, and Carson M. Finn; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Paul and Karen Jenack, Lowville; Frederick Jenack, Harrisville; William and Suzanne, Fairport; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ellen and Richard Bush, Lowville; Dixie and Thomas Dickenson, Harrisville.

Her father, Edward C. Jenack, died before her.

Mrs. Finn was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Valley Homemakers.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and playing cards on Sunday night.

A funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher J. Looby, Parochial Vicar, officiating. Spring burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 31, at the Sundquist Funeral Home, 7676 N. State Street, Lowville.

Martha G. Donaldson, 100, Carthage

March 31, 2008

Martha G. Donaldson, 100, of 222 State Street, Apt. 204, died Saturday March 29, at her home.

Born Feb. 22, 1908, in Hopkinton, the daughter of the late Frank and Eva Youngs Gardner, she attended Carthage Schools.

Mrs. Donaldson worked for New York Telephone Company in Carthage for 33 years, retiring as a chief operator in 1965.

She married Daniel Youngs on Jan. 28, 1926.

He died in 1970.

She married Stanley Donaldson on May 18, 1976.

He died in 1996.

Mrs. Donaldson was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage.

She was a member of the Pioneer’s club of America, Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary, the Sunshine Class of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Club, and the Argonaut Club.

Surviving are a son and his wife, Daniel and Corleen Youngs, Boonville; eight grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by seven sisters; Clara Simons, Elizabeth Newton, Chloe Genter, Alice Roy, Mary Monroe, Leona Gardner, and Catherine Wells; five brothers Melvin, Frank, Allen, Emery, and LeRoy.

Calling hours wil be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Bossout-Lundy Funeral Home Inc., 500 State Street, Carthage.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2,  in the chapel at the funeral home with Rev. Linda J. Harris, pastor of the Carthage United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage.

Memorial donations may be made to the Carthage Ambulance Fund.

Richard C. Adams, 76, Dexter

March 31, 2008

Richard C. Adams, age 76 of Moffet rd., Dexter passed away Friday evening at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown. Richard had been a resident there for four and a half years and passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Richard was born June 1, 1931 on the family farm on Pillar Point. He attended school at Woodheads Corners on Pillar Point and graduated from Dexter High School in 1948.

Richard married Patricia M. Mullin on May 28, 1950 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Dexter and the couple lived on Pillar Point all their married lives.

0329adamsobit.jpgThe couple owned and operated a farm on Pillar Point until their barn burned. Richard was also a bus-driver and became Transportation Supervisor for General Brown Central High School from 1955 until retiring in 1976 due to disability from multiple sclerosis.

Richard was a 53 year member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Dexter and past trustee and elder of the church. He was also a 50 year member of Dexter Lodge 1072 F. 7A.M. and had served as master and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2002. He was also a member of Jeff-Lewis Square Club, Pillar Point Hustlers 4-H Club as a youth, 4-H Council and attended Club Congress as well as judging cattle throughout the state. He showed cattle at Jefferson County Fair for many years and was chosen with his cousin Leon Timerman to tour the country with Elsie the Bordens Cow, Elmer and their children Beulah and Beauregard. During those tours they attended State Fairs, many parades, The Good Housekeeping Institute, ball games, Department Stores and in 1953 Elsie and Beauregard were in Watertown for the Dairyland Festival Parade and stayed at the Woodruff Hotel. Richard also taught tractor safety maintenance courses and was very active in the Jeff-Lewis Support Group for Multiple Sclerosis.

He also was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed building things like the family home.

Richard is survived by his wife Patricia and three children and their spouses- Michael R. and Josephine Adams of Dexter, Debbie Adams-Kaden and her husband James of Huntington Station, N.Y., and Susan Haller and her husband Donald of Dexter. His grandchildren John Adams and wife Rachelle, Chris Adams and wife Michele, Serena Adams, William Kaden and wife Abigail, James Kaden, Seth and Emily Haller and 2 great grandchildren Rebeka Adams and Preston Richard.

A sister Barbara Adams of Cortland survives and he was predeceased by a brother Raymond Adams in 2003 and their parents Niles and Florence Adams.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter with the Rev. Gail Parsons of 1st Presbyterian Church of Dexter officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery following cremation. Calling hours will be Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 with a Masonic Service held at 7:30 P.M. Donations may be made to 1st Presbyterian Church of Dexter, Masonic Brotherhood Fund or the Charity of Ones Choice in lieu of flowers.

Robert J. Tompkins, 84, Watertown

March 31, 2008

Robert J. Tompkins, 84, of Midtowns Towers, died Friday, March 28, at University Hospital in Syracuse after falling at home and suffering a head injury.

Born Dec. 27, 1923, in Watertown, a son of Herbert S. and Marguerite Hallen Tompkins, he graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in 1947 after his first honorable discharge from the Army.

0328thompkinsobit.jpg Before re-entering the Army and during his military career, he attended North Carolina State University at Raleigh, Georgetown University, St. Lawrence University. He graduated from Fayetteville State University with a bachelors of History and also received an associates of arts degree from the University of the State of New York.

Mr. Tompkins entered the Army on Jan. 14, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 1, 1981, as sergeant first class.

During his military career, he served as an Infantryman and a Broadcast Journalist.

During World War II, he participated in the Air Offensive in Europe where he received a Purple Heart for wounds received during a mission.

Mr. Tompkins also served in the Vietnam War.

Due to his exemplary service he received seven Good Conduct Medals, fifteen Air Medals and two Meritorious Unit Citations among his many medals and awards he received.

He is a member of the 390th Bomb Group Veterans Association and a life member of the 301st Veterans Association.

On March 25, 1985, he received a letter of appreciation from Major General William S. Carpenter Jr., then Commanding General of Fort Drum, for donating a commemorative World War II Victory Collection of engraved commando knives.

On Oct. 29, 1996, he received a commemorative medal representing “The 50th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II) from then Russian President Boris Yeltsin.

Surviving are three sisters, Anne Ehrbar, New York City, and Delray Beach, Fla., Mary Leana, Baldwinsville, and Alice Carol, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

His brother, Herbert, died previously.

Calling hours will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc., with a 5 p.m. funeral service with Rev. Leon Schilling officiating.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Margie J. Charlton, 82, Watertown

March 31, 2008

Margie J. Charlton, 82, 1620 Huntington St., died March 27, at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1925, in Oriskanny Falls, a daughter of Harper and Florence Beach Mandigo, she attended schools in Oriskanny Falls and moved to Watertown in the early 1960s.

She married Hersal Charlton on May 17, 1947, in Ogdensburg with Rev. Gerald Boyce officiating. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Charlton was employed as a nurse’s aid at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Massena, Jefferson County Nursing Home and Mercy of Northern New York.

As a young woman, Mrs. Charlton was a member of the Canadian Armed Services.

Surviving are six sons and two daughters-in-law, Douglas and Priscilla, Farmington, Lawrence, Massena, William and Sue, Wooster, Ohio, triplets, Terrence, Timothy and Thomas, all of Watertown; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Three brothers and a sister all died before her.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Jeffrey Smith officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery.

Betty I. Farr, 75, Carthage

March 31, 2008

Betty I. Farr, 75, of 20113 Strickland Road, died Friday, March 28, at Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage under the care of her family and friends. She had been ill with cancer.

Born March 24, 1933, in South Rutland, the daughter of Spencer and Belle Irene Worthman Feisthamel, she attended area schools.

Mrs. Farr worked for Crown Zeller Bach for 15-plus years.

A marriage to Clark Hall ended in divorce. She married Francis “Bud” Rancier. He died in 1983.

She married Donald D. Farr on Sept. 28, 1985, in Carthage. She was employed as a Home Health Aide for Jefferson County Public Health Nursing until she retired.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Carthage.

Mrs. Farr was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Carthage; she was a 0328farrobit.jpgmember of St. James Catholic Church Seniors “VIP” Club, and a member of the Seniors group at Brady Acres, Deferiet, and Copenhagen.

Surviving are her husband, Donald D. Farr, Carthage; a daughter and her husband, Diane and Paul Smith, Carthage; two step-daughters and their husbands, Cindy and Steven Crosbie, Brownville, and Lynn and Jerry Pickens, Las Vegas; and two step-sons and their wives, Terry and Debbie Rancier, Stormville, and Donald and Carrie Farr, Lowville.

Two brothers, James Hall and Francis Feisthamel, and two sisters, Shirley Simmons and Edna St. Louis, all died before her.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home Inc. 500 State St., Carthage.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Linda J. Harris officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorial Donations in her memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sophia G. Eaton, 95, Watertown

March 31, 2008

Sophia G. Eaton, 95, of 325 S. Rutland St., died Friday, March 28, at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

There will be no calling hours or a funeral service. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.

She is survived by cousins.

Born Aug. 8, 1912, in Sayre, Pa., a daughter of Frank and Anna Govern, she graduated from Sayre High School in 1930.

She married Thomas S. Eaton of Watertown in New York City at the Church Around the Corner.

The couple moved to Watertown where her husband was a licensed surveyor for the City of Watertown. He died in 1981.

She held various jobs in Watertown.
