The 195th anniversary of the Battle of York and death of General Zebulon Pike is observed on April 27.

General Pike led the April 27, 1813 attack on York (Toronto, Canada) from Sackets Harbor with 1,700 troops.

The powder magazine’s explosion at York caused the death of General Pike and many others.

He was buried in Sackets Harbor, his grave moved twice, and today his remains rest in the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery where a monument marks his grave.

On the anniversary weekend the Sackets Harbor Battlefield Alliance holds its “Moveable Feast” fund raising event Saturday evening April 26 starting at 5pm. Reservations and advance payments required.

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site opens for the season on Saturday May 17 from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday May 18 from 1-5 pm.

A portrait of Zebulon Pike, attributed to Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), will be on view in the Lieutenant’s House gallery.
