Catherine Agnes Slate, 85, Wellesley Island


Catherine Agnes Slate, 85, widow of Wellesley Island native Lewis E. Slate, and longtime Wellesley Island resident, died Wednesday, April 23, at her home.

0424slateobit.jpg Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. Deacon Bernard E. Slate, son of Mrs. Slate, will conduct a service at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

A prayer service will be held 9:45 a.m. Monday, April 28, at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday by Rev. Christopher J. Looby, Rev. Leo A. Wiley and Rev. Robert L. Decker in St. Cyril’s Church, Alexandria Bay. Deacon Bernard E. Slate, son, will assist. Burial will be on the Slate family plot in Riverside Cemetery Wellesley Island.

A luncheon will follow the funeral mass in St. Cyril’s Church Hall, Alexandria Bay.

She was born Feb. 12, 1923, in the Yaddow homestead on the family farm at Massena Point, Massena, the daughter of Harry S. and Francis French Yaddow.

She married Lewis E. Slate on June 12, 1944 in the old St. Mary’s Church, Massena, with the reverend Daniel J. Lyddy Pastor officiating. The Slates observed their 50th wedding anniversary on June 12, 1994.

Mr. and Mrs. Slate owned a home on the St. Lawrence River, Westminster Park Wellesley Island for over 43 years. They moved to their present Clayton home in 1989. They continued to spend much time on Wellesley Island, especially during the summer months.

Mrs. Slate’s late husband Lewis E. Slate was once associated with his parents in the ownership of the Slate family farms and cattle business on Wellesley Island, was a long time employee of the Thousand Island Club and retired from Crowley Foods Inc. in LaFargeville in 1982.

After the death of Mrs. Slate’s mother in-law, the family lived with their father in-law at the family homestead on the St. Lawrence River overlooking the Thousand Island Islands International Bridge at Peel dock Wellesley Island. The Slate homestead burned in the late 1980’s and part of the property became the site of the Torch Light Motel. Parts of the former properties also became the future sites of Anchor Motor freight Inc., the Otter Point Cottage and home development sites.

Mrs. Slate was a life member of the Edward John Noble Hospital, River Hospital Auxiliary, Alexandria Bay, friends of the Nature Center, Wellesley Island, the Tibbet’s Point Lighthouse Association, M.J. Hummel collectors club, the Town of Diana Historical Society and the Sacred Heart Foundation. She was a former member of the Alexandria Central School PTA. She was a current member of the Friends of Cobleskill College of Technology, State University of New York.

She was a longtime communicant of St. Cyril’s Church in Alexandria Bay, the Alter Rosary Society, Perpetual member of the league of St. Jude, and former member of the Reverend Monsignor Floyd J. Brown Society, Hadhams Hall Ogdensburg New York.

A scholarship award of Mrs. Slate’s in-laws was established in 1995 honoring Sylvester C. and L. May Pike-Slate at Harrisville Central School. The award is given to an outstanding member of the high school senior graduation class each year.

Mrs. Slate with her son Bernard were co-owners of Heritage Island Antique and Gift Shop on Wellesley Island and Clayton.

Surviving are a son, Bernard E. Slate, retired Harrisville Central School teacher and a Deacon for the Diocese of Ogdensburg assigned at the Catholic Community of Alexandria, Alexandria Bay and Redwood; two sister in-laws, Mrs. Andrew (Jeannette Williams) Slate, Wellesley Island and Mrs. Clifford (Anna LaClair) Yaddow, Potsdam; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Slate was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Lewis E. Slate, who passed away April 6, 1999; four sisters, Margaret Yaddow, Massena, Lillian Hart, Tupper Lake, Beulah Yaddow, Norfolk, and Mary LaClair, Massena; and three brothers Clifford Yaddow, Potsdam, Kenneth Yaddow, Massena and Hubert Yaddow, Lewisville.

Donations may be made in her name to the Riverside Cemetery Association Wellesley Island in care of Mrs. Christine Holloway, Clayton, Mrs. Charlotte Wellins, Wellesley Island, or River Hospital, Alexandria Bay in care of Mrs. Stephen Taylor, Thousand Islands Park.
