George E. Towers, 90, Depauville
George W. Towers, 90, of Old Town Springs Road, died Tuesday, April 29, at Samaritan Medical Center where he had been a patient since April 14.
Born May 7, 1917, on Wellesley Island, son of George and Alice Irene Brown Towers, he attended a local one-room school house.
Mr. Towers enlisted in the Army on Jan. 7, 1942, serving in the Army Air Corps. He served with the 482 Service Squadron, 5th Air Force as an aircraft armorer and participated in campaigns from New Guinea to the Philippines, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Mr. Towers received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged Aug. 27, 1945 at the rank of sergeant.
He married Edith Pearl Harden on March 24, 1945, at Fineview Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip D. Mang officiating. The couple lived on Wellesley Island until they moved to Depauville and spent winters in Florida. She died June 18, 1998.
Mr. Towers was a farmer for a time and owned and operated Towers Riverside Cottages, both on Wellesley Island. In 1938 he worked on the construction of the Thousand Islands Bridge and also with the Army Corp. of Engineers to map the St. Lawrence Seaway. Later he worked for the Milton Weir family of Welcome Island as a caretaker and landscaper.
He enjoyed fishing and golf, serving as a caddy at the T.I. Country Club on Wellesley Island at the age of eight and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, the John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904, all of Alexandria Bay, and the Depauville United Methodist Church, Depauville.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Brenda and Stephen Forman, Watertown; a grandson, Joel Forman, Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Minnie Hartman, Alexandria Bay; a sister-in-law, Julia Burns, Clayton; nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Charles, Howard, Earl and David “Quinten” died before him.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., 38422 Route 37, Theresa, with Rev. Donald Briant, Depauville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island.
