Dan Donovan is a high school senior from Wanakena who has logged thousands of miles on the water as one of the north country’s finest canoeists.
Dan has been paddling competitively for the past year.
If you ask him how he has been so successful against far more experienced competition, he’ll tell you he’s got a deep family connection to the sport.
“My uncle and my cousin were big into canoe racing and a year ago my uncle passed away and I thought it was an excellent opportunity to start paddling and dedicate it to my uncle,” Dan said.
The sport of canoe racing has exploded in recent years.
Instead of wood, Dan’s canoe is made of ultra light carbon fiber.
Dan’s paddle weighs less than a pound.
As for the races, they cover incredible distances-up to 90 miles and they’re held across the country.
Dan has his sights set on races across New York and Pennsylvania - with a keen focus on this year’s nationals in Indiana.
