Emma I. Locksmith, 99, Evans Mills


Emma I. Locksmith, 99, formerly of Evans Mills ,died early Monday, Jan. 7, at Mercy of Northern New York, Watertown, where she had been a resident.

A graveside service will be held 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Evans Mills Cemetery.

Born April 13, 1908, in Carthage, daughter of Frank and Mary Austin Covey, she attended Evans Mills High School.

0107locksmithobit.jpg She married Joseph Locksmith on Dec. 22, 1924, in Carthage. The couple resided in Evans Mills and had been very active in village affairs. Mr. Locksmith died Aug. 4, 1960.

Mrs. Locksmith was a homemaker, but also had driven a gas truck during World War II for Sagamore Oil, had been a waitress at Bill’s Restaurant, both in Evans Mills and had been a seamstress at Model Homes, Watertown.

She had been a member of the Evans Mills Fire Department Auxiliary and responded to ambulance calls. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Evans Mills.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking, dancing, listening to music, especially the big band sound and was an avid professional baseball fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Buell, Dexter; eight grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.

Two daughters, Gertrude Briant and Cheryl VanAllen, a half brother, Otis Brown, and a half sister, Ada Towne, all died before her.

The funeral will be 8 p.m. Wednesday. Jan. 9, at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., 8380 South Main Street, Evans Mills, with Rev. Donald Briant, pastor of Clayton, Depauville and Wellesley Island United Methodist churches and grandson of Mrs. Locksmith, assisted by Rev. Penni Farrington, pastor of Evans Mills and Philadelphia United Methodist Churches. A calling hour will be 7 to 8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the spring in Evans Mills Cemetery.
