Town of Croghan Looking to Change Assessor Situation
Print This Page
A crowd of people turned out to Beaver River Central to discuss whether or not the board of three-elected assessors should be replaced with a single appointed assessor.
The State Office of Real Property Services made its case for eliminating the board, saying that a single appointed assessor would have more training and be more cost effective in the long run.
Also, an independent contractor wouldn’t be necessary for a reassessment and the town would not have to worry about finding three people to serve on the board.
However, some people in the township like having the control that comes with electing their assessors, even if they can share grievances with the appointed assessor.
“A grievance board never listens, it never changes,” said Town of Croghan resident Todd Lyndacker.
Town Supervisor John Jones says that if an assessor isn’t appointed, then a reassessment probably won’t happen.
“If you don’t keep up with the assessments, then it becomes so easy to fall behind. There’s a lot of value out there and I just think it’s time the board look at it again.”
Town officials say that Croghan is overdue for a reassessment with over 2,500 parcels that haven’t been reassessed for 10 years.

Hasn’t worked in the boarding Town of New Bremen. Why would it work in the Town of Croghan? Grievance board? as Mr. Lyndaker said, “you will never see a change in your assessment” because of it being a “trained” assessor making the calls. The owner of Adirondack International Speedway is living proof of that. Assessed for over 3 million? Had to hire private attorney to be “heard” (because no one is Lewis County wanted to hear him) After a long battle- he “won” his case in the end!
Take it to vote!

OVER TAXED
I am familiar with the property assessment process. I find it hard that there are properties that haven’t been reassessed in ten years. If it is being said that there hasn’t been a change in assessment revenues in the past ten years in the town of Croghan then I wish I would have built my home in the town of Croghan. We in New Bremen and other townships that have the same assessor are looking at some pretty heafty increases in property taxes due to this years reassessments. It is the laws that create this system and I doubt that an assessor or a board of assessors will even consider changes given the sad shape this nation is in right now. The rapidly rising cost of everything has all public entities scrambling to get operating revenues to provide the public with servbices that they demand.
Hopefully in the near future some one will say the “the buck stops here” and we can get back on track as the greatest nation on earth. If you think $4.00 a gallon is bad, you will be shocked at 7 to 10 dollars I am sure. But don’t let me convince anyone that a short term fix should be to drill for oil on the “pristine lands of the great USA”.
Karen and Charlie, I AGREE with you both. And I truly do beleive that we need a change.Ifeel bad for the senior citizens in the township of New Bremen,at least have a heart and give them a break.Taxes and Gas prices increasing, not our wages is making it hard for all but where are they going with these assessments?Making unfair calls towards individuals is going to get them in the end. I also say …TAKE IT TO VOTE!!! TIME FOR A CHANGE. SINCERELY OVER TAXED!!!!!!!
