Town of Alexandria Still Looking for Solution to Water District Woes

water1.jpgWhile most agreed that the Redwood Water District was a necessary step, it has created as many problems as it has solved since its completion in January.

Residents in the district, whether or not they are hooked into the water system, must pay a benefit assessment fee, something that many are angry about.

The State Comptroller’s office required the town council to impose the benefit assessment charge in order to secure funding for the project from the state.

Town of Alexandria Supervisor Martha Millet said that if the water line runs through a person’s property, they have to be charged.

martha.jpgWhat the town can control is the charge for those residents who are not hooked up to the system.

“Residents who live around the corridor…some of them were having trouble paying the 25 cents per foot… We’re just trying to make it easy for people,” she said.

People are also confused about the billing procedure and are trying to find the middle ground between what they were promised and what is really going on.

Some say they were promised by state officials and other town lawmakers that theybill.jpg were not supposed to pay anything if they allowed the water line through their property.

With that in mind, several people told 7News reporter Jessica Cain that an adjustment to the benefit assessment would not be enough and that they would continue to fight for what they feel is the right thing to do.
