Carthage Closed Meeting to Involve Employment Talks, Not Budget Details

After the Carthage budget was voted down on Tuesday night, Superintendent Carl Militello said the board would meet in executive session to discuss budget issues.
That reason alone is not enough to validate closing the meeting to the public and the board is saying that it is being held to discuss employment of certain individuals or individual.
Speaking with Robert Freeman, an open government expert, Mr. Freeman explained that if the board is speaking about hiring particular individuals, then closed sessions are okay.
However, if the board were discussing budget details in executive session, then the public should be allowed.
“Why should there be any consideration of discussing (the budget) issue in private? It’s important to the community,” he said.
Which may be why the board is not holding a closed door session on the budget as previously thought.
7News’ reporter Jessica Cain spoke with Carthage Superintendent Carl Militello, who said this morning that the board would not discuss the budget at tonight’s meeting.
The board will meet publicly, then call an executive session.
A public meeting is being scheduled for next week to discuss the budget and cuts.

They got caught trying to meet in private about the budget so they changed the agenda for the meeting to make it closed door!! Good job Carthage School Board! Always setting the good example for the students!!
Well cutting positions DOES decrease the budget….I smell something fishy. I might be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but the timing just seems a LITTLE too coincidental. When was this meeting scheduled?
I have left the Carthage Board of education two e-mails to a question I have about the state reducing the amount of money they said we would get toward the expansion 1.6 mil to be exact. My question is if the money is no longer available why are we obligated to the field turf that cost around 1.2 mil? I have asked them too if any board member has asked the state this question? No response has been given. They are hiding behind closed doors and these same closed doors are what ousted the three incumbent board members. They still do not learn. It’s not about who is right or who is wrong. The new elected board members should be involved with the budget process. They claim they are not allowed in executive, since when has this [unsupported allegation removed here] school board followed the rules in the past few weeks, months or years. The people spoke we want what is best for the kids not the clicks that continue to run that school.
Well here we go again. I guess maybe the school board will finally learn that the voters of this school district mean business. If they think that we the public will allow them to hide what they intend to do they can think again. I have also heard that they plan to stop all extra activities except the sport s there at the school. Well ! what makes the sports so special. It should be decided that all extra activites be divided equal in their cuts. The new turf they put in was a huge expence and really not needed. The out going board members are trying to demoralize and force issues that are not really necessary.
why is everyone complaining over the turf field? the field was in rough shape and they had a hard time maintaining it. The school will be saving alot more money because they wont have to be out there watering the field and trying to get it ready for all the games played on it. Why are none of you complaining about the new pool that they are having put in? A lot more sports use that turf field they are putting in out there than they would use that new pool. The other pool was in much better shape than that grass field was.
I have a novel idea ! Let’s uncreate some of the created postions that were put in place, I don’t believe that we need that many assistants or assistant to the assistant or any other trumped up title that was awarded to certain people who needed to pad their retirement fund. There is a lot of waste in every department in the school. How about asking employees of every department for ideas on how to save some of this money? I for one am waiting for the public hearing to see how and where the cuts will be made.
