A New Chapter for the Depauville Library and Community Center

Connie Haver still remembers when her “second home” was almost lost to fire.
“I didn’t think we’d ever have a library, but it’s improved. It’s better now,” she says.
Connie has been the librarian at the Depauville Library and Community Center for 25 years.
The library caught fire last September after someone noticed smoke emanating from the building.
The community center and library, according to Havers, is the only gathering place for the entire community of Depauville and is the heart of many events and meetings.
In the flames, about 4,000 books were lost, but little by little the books are filling the shelves again.
Some have been donated by the North Country Library System while others the library had to buy back.
Work on the library has been constant and new furnishings, carpeting, lighting and shelves have been added.
The center re-opened at the beginning of the month with the help of people who live in Depauville and the Town of Clayton council, which owns the library.
Connie says she hopes the restored center will give people the perfect spot to come in, open a book and escape the world for a while.
