There is a lot happening around the North Country this weekend. I am highlighting theater and live performance.
Clayton, New York is hopping this weekend with concerts both nights at the elegant, historic and beautifully renovated Clayton Opera House.
“Characters in Song:” A Broadway Cabaret is 7:30pm Friday. Director Andrew Wood, Pianist Jim Burr and Vocalists Phillip Dyke, Elizabeth Phimister Smith and Erin McCarthy Brick present songs from classic and contemporary Broadway Shows.
On Saturday, Join the Rochester Philharmonic’s principal pops conductor, Jeff Tyzik, as he leads the orchestra through an American Ragtime concert featuring works by Joplin, Gershwin, Morton and one of his own original compositions dedicated to the St. Lawrence River. Go early to the gorgeous River Town and sample great NY state edible products at the Great New York State Food and Wine Festival 2008.
If you are looking for something to do in the Adirondacks check out the Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake. Pendragon, is the Adirondack’s only year-round professional theatre. This venerable venue has been going strong for over twenty five years. This weekend enjoy the double bill of “The Real Inspector Hound” and “Black Comedy.”

If you are looking to visit our neighbor to the north, the 1000 Islands Playhouse in Gananoque is one of the best professional theaters anywhere, let alone our own backyard. It is less than an hour’s drive from Watertown! Not only are you guranteed a great show, but you will also have a great view of the majestic St. Lawrence River.
But if Theater isn’t your bag and you are just looking to get out of the house and you love strawberries (who doesn’t?) pop in to Adams and check out the Strawberry Festival. Sponsored by the South Jefferson Historical Association it runs from 10:30 am to 6:30pm on Friday and from 10:30 am - 6:30pm
on Saturday. Located at Sixtown Mettinghouse, 33 East Church Street. There are plenty of eats: Chicken Barbeque, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and of course everything STRAWBERRY. There is a lot more to do besides eating: Crafts, vintage equipment displays, silent auctions, raffles, antique appraisals, exploration of local history and children’s events.
