Telecommunications giant Verizon has just announced it is providing high speed broadband wireless Internet access to north country customers.
Officials say until now, this type of service was only available as far north as Sandy Creek in Oswego County.
The broadband network now extends through Watertown and north to Potsdam.
Company officials say it will allow people to get wireless signals in more rural areas like campsites.
“They’ll be able to take their laptop or if they have a camp where they have a PC already there or if they bring it from home, they can use a modem on those devices to get the Internet wirelessly. They can take their laptop out on the dock. They can take their laptop out on their boat,” said Selene Rowland of Verizon.
The announcement is good news for businesses as well.
Steve Weed owns Steve Weed Productions.
He records and streams events on the internet and says this could make the job easier.
“If I wanted to go do a basketball game or a football game, I wouldn’t have to find an ethernet land line or I wouldn’t have to get satellite Internet. I’d just be able to hit a cell tower and we’d be able to broadcast live from basically anywhere, any time,” said Weed.
Verizon’s new broadband service also extends to cell phones as well allowing customers to quickly download video clips and ring tones.
