Carpooling Becomes More Popular As Gas Prices Soar

Thom Caroon and Jim Dodson are part of a new wave of commuters searching for better options as fuel costs rise.
Both men work at Lewis County General Hospital.
Caroon has been driving to and from Cape Vincent to go to work.
His Ford Windstar gets 20 miles per gallon.
Dodson lives not too far away in Chaumont and drives a Toyota Yaris, which gets 42 miles per gallon.
“Filling my car is between $45 and sometimes $50, depending on how the price of gas fluctuates,” said Dodson.
Dodson and Caroon plan to start carpooling from Three Mile Bay this Wednesday.
Instead of paying $100 a week for gas, Caroon will reimburse Dodson about $25 weekly.
“A hundred dollars a month instead of $400 - $425 a month is quite a savings,” said Caroon.
Hope Scouten also works at Lewis County General.
She commutes 20 miles to and from her home in Port Leyden.
Scouten got on the carpool bandwagon last year.
Now a $75 fill up lasts two weeks instead of one.
“You’re probably going to see it more and more as the gas goes up and the groceries go up,” said Scouten.
The hospital is even promoting the carpool idea in its newsletter.
