The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department has charged two people in connection with the theft of copper from a business in the town of Pierrepont.
Detectives arrested 25 year old Thomas Scovil of 929 State Route 72 in Potsdam.
He’s charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and making a false written statement.
Officials said Scovil broke into S&L Electric’s storage supply building in Pierrepont last month and stole $1,475 worth of copper.
According to detectives, Scovil tried to put the blame on someone else by filing a false written statement with police.
Officials also arrested Scovil’s 20 year old girlfriend, Terissa Billings of 731 State Route 310 in Canton.
She was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and making a false written statement.
Detectives said Billings cashed in the copper at a local scrap yard knowing it was stolen.
They allege she then gave a false statement to police by putting the blame for the crime on someone else.
Scovil and Billings were arraigned in Stockholm Town Court.
Scovil’s bail was set at $15,000 cash and he was sent to the county jail.
Billings was released to the supervision of probation.
