Mohawk Police were following a 1997 Ford pickup Tuesday when a second vehicle slowed the officer down and prevented him from stopping the truck.

The pickup then sped away at a high rate of speed.

Authorities located the truck a short time later, but the male driver fled the scene on foot.

Authorities seized 240,000 cigarettes worth an estimated $26,400 from the pickup truck.

The untaxed cigarettes are believed to have been manufactured on the American side of the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.

RCMP Sergeant Michael Harvey said, “Our police forces will continue to work together to ensure that those who do not obey the laws are stopped.”

The unidentified male has not been located as the investigation continues.
