For Your Health: Keeping Kids Active

fyh.jpgIn this week’s For Your Health, a recent American Medical Association study says physical activity has dropped significantly for middle school students.

The study says kids age nine to 13 get about a half hour of exercise a week.

That’s down from about three hours a day.

The Carthage YMCA is fighting the exercise slump.

The fitness center has launched a free summer program for middle school kids.

When school resumes this fall, the Y will host a similar 20 week long program called Fun To Be Fit at Carthage Middle School.

The Y says the programs aim to find fun ways to keep kids active without exactly putting them through a traditional workout.

“A lot of times we say, okay kids, let’s get physically active let’s get physically fit, and it’s lost that getting active is just play,” said YMCA Director Rebecca Reed.

Up to 120 kids can sign up for Fun To Be Fit.

The goal is to keep kids moving for an extra 90 minutes a week.
