Zoo Welcomes Bouncing Baby Elk

There’s a new face at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown.
Five-week old Mystic is the newest addition to the group of elk at the zoo.
But Mystic was a surprise to the zoo staff because they did not know her mom, Rosie, was pregnant until she gave birth last month.
Now that Rosie is giving Mystic a little more freedom to roam, zoo visitors can get a much better look at her.
“The first few weeks of life the babies will just hide and the spotting color helps them blend in. So you could have come out to see her, but you would have seen a little brown spot way in the back,” said zoo executive director Dr. John Foster.
In the coming weeks, Mystic will be working on getting more strength to keep up with the rest of the elk.
