Jefferson County Has New System To Track Gas Usage

Jefferson County uses hundreds of thousands of gallons of gasoline a year.
It has always kept track of its fuel consumption.
But now there’s a new system - a computer program which records every gallon pumped into county vehicles and police cruisers.
“That’s obviously a concern of ours, to properly track all of the gas consumption,” said Spike Decker of the county’s Buildings & Grounds Department.
“It shows the county that nobody is stealing gas from us or the county highway. We both have the same system in place,” said County Undersheriff Tim Dowe.
But, there have been setbacks with the new system.
With any new technology, you can encounter problems and from time to time, the computers haven’t worked.
The gas pump at the county highway department was down for a while Friday because a computer screen was broken.
At the public safety building, police officers couldn’t fill up for a couple of days because of other problems.
“There was a glitch in the programming and the company that services them is out of Florida so it took them a bit to come up here,” said
Officials say the kinks are easily ironed out.
The new system could lead to eventual cost savings - helping the county determine which of its vehicles are most fuel efficient.
