Watertown Gets Tough On Overgrown Lawns

The city of Watertown is cracking down on people who don’t mow their lawns.
Over the last two months, the city has received 151 calls about overgrown grass.
An abandoned home on Bowers Avenue has been the subject of complaints.
Before crews mowed the property, the grass and weeds were more than five feet tall in spots.
Grass is supposed to remain under 10 inches tall.
When it’s not, homeowners receive a code violation notice.
If the grass isn’t mowed in five days, crews do it at the homeowner’s expense.
“I’ve seen lawns cost $300 to $400 to mow depending on the number of men, what equipment has to be used and then you add the surcharge,” said Code Enforcement Supervisor Shawn McWayne.
DPW crews finished mowing the overgrown grass at the Bowers Avenue home.
When there are no homeowners present, the bill for the cleanup is added to the property taxes.
