Study Shows Demand for Student Housing at Jefferson Community College

In April, Jefferson Community College (JCC) conducted a student housing market study. The purpose of the study was to determine if there is sufficient demand to warrant the development of student housing at Jefferson and, if so, what unit types would be most appealing to students.

Anderson Strickler, the firm hired to conduct the study, held focus groups with current students and prospective students, telephone interviews with high school guidance counselors and surveys of current students and prospective students.

The final results showed that there was positive demand for student housing.

“At this point in time, College administration and Jefferson’s Board of Trustees are reviewing the results of the study and deciding next steps,” said Carole A. McCoy, president of Jefferson Community College. “We will need to determine the costs associated with student housing and develop an implementation plan should we move forward with a residential experience for our students.”

This isn’t the first time JCC looked into dormitories.

Almost 20 years ago, Coffeen Heights housed students, but the demand just wasn’t there.

Currently, more than half (17) of the 30 SUNY community colleges offer residential housing for students. In central and northern New York, Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, Herkimer County Community College, North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, Clinton Community College, Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica and Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown offer on-campus housing for students.
