CHOPIN COMES TO THE CAPE. LIKE ELVIS HE HAS APPARENTLY BEEN SPOTTED ALIVE AND WANDERING AROUND.
The 2008 Thousand Islands International Piano Competition for Young People, sponsored by the Chopin Society of the Thousand Islands and the Cape Vincent Arts Council is the not only a lot to say, but is the premiere ARTS event in the North Country this weekend.
The 6th Annual International Piano Competition for Young People will be held September 12-14, 2008 at the historic Maple Grove estate on West Broadway in Cape Vincent. The event is sponsored by the Chopin Society of the Thousand Islands and the Cape Vincent Arts Council with funding provided by the NY State Council on the Arts which is administered by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, and grants from the Rhodes and Northern New York Community Foundations.
While the grounds are elegant, the setting is informal. Admission is free. Performances begin at 10:00 am each morning with a break at noon and resuming again at 1:00 pm. On Saturday at 3:00 pm, there will be guest performances including one of last year’s winners. An award ceremony will follow Sunday’s performances.
THEATER -
Shameless plug.
My play, “Man on Television” is being read with two other short plays this Sunday, September 14th at 1pm at the Redhouse in Syracuse. The Cast for my reading is all local–from the Watertown area. My play is one of three being read for the season opener of the Armory Square Playhouse, where I am a member. For more information.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse is still going strong, if you haven’t had a chance to see a show yet, now is a good time as you can avoid the high summer crowds. Half Life by John Mighton is playing through October 4th. In this award winning play, nursing home residents Clara and Patrick fall in love, but their protective children are wary and perhaps envious of this onconventional and unexpected affair.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse has a great reputation for professionalism and stellar entertainment. Treat yourself to some theater, before their season ends. Less than one hour from Watertown, and worth the trip.

The 2-mile Wag-A-Thon is a community dog walk to benefit the Jefferson Community College (JCC) Foundation, an organization dedicated to working with the College, the community and alumni to enhance the educational opportunities provided by Jefferson. The Foundation annually distributes 160 scholarships totaling over $180,000.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Thompson Park Pavilion with coffee and donuts for participants, compliments of Dunkin’ Donuts. There is no registration fee, however walkers are encouraged to collect pledges and participants who pre-register by September 5th will automatically receive a Wag-A-Thon t-shirt provided by Victory Promotions.
Just for entering, each walker and their wagger will receive a doggie bag filled with food, goodies and a raffle ticket to win one of many great prizes. The person collecting the most pledge dollars/donations will be awarded a grand prize. For $20 in pledges or donations, participants will receive a 3rd Annual Wag-A-Thon t-shirt. Participants who donate/pledge over $35 will also receive a Wag-A-Thon dog dish - great for traveling - and an additional raffle ticket.
