WWNY-DT Offers High-Definition CBS Programming and Digital FOX Broadcasts
[Watertown, NY] -WWNY-TV broadcasts digitally (over-the-air on channel 35.) Broadcasts include CBS network programming in “high-definition” (HDTV) when available. HDTV signals deliver widescreen, high resolution, theater-like pictures and sound.
Digital signals produce better picture quality than current analog broadcasts because they will not suffer from analog distortion like snow or ghosting. “If the consumer were to think of analog TV as good, Digital is better and HDTV is the best!” said Jim Corbin, Program Director. “Digital broadcasting can also offer viewers other services like interactivity, electronic program guides, and multi-channel viewing. WWNY multicasts WNYF Fox-28’s programming on a secondary channel in standard definition. Our ability to multi-cast the WNYF programming greatly expands its distribution. The over-the-air viewer greatly benefits from our combination of HD CBS and SD Fox programming.”
A Federal Government mandate requires stations to adopt the first significant change in over-the-air television broadcasting technology in 50 years. All commercial stations were to be broadcasting digitally by May 1, 2002. The transition has been delayed in many markets by zoning issues, the economy, and delays in delivery and installation of equipment.
“WWNY started the planning years before the deadline. Installation delays allowed us time to invest and install equipment that will permit us to not only broadcast digitally but in high-definition.” said Cathy Pircsuk, General Manager.
For consumers to view WWNY’s digital signal they will need a DTV/HDTV receiver and monitor, or a set-top box. WWNY-HD is also available on Time Warner Cable on channel 875. The Government requires stations to broadcast both analog and digital signals until 2/17/2009, thereafter only digitally. WWNY has joined over 1000 other stations in the nation broadcasting digitally.
Editors note: WNYF is available on Time Warner cable in HDTV on channel 878. The station has plans to broadcast digitally and in HDTV sometime after 2009. For more info about the transition and our stations go to:
