Feedback: The Secret To A Long And Happy Marriage

May 14, 2008

married2.jpgIn Lowville, it’s proof that love is ageless.

Couples are renewing and blessing their wedding vows.

Add up all those years and you’re talking about centuries of marriage.

Seven couples were involved in the ceremony at Lewis County General Hospital.

The hospital nursing home sponsored the event.

married.jpgIncluded in the group of the happily married were George and Verna Gilmore, who will celebrate their 65th anniversary Thursday.

George said there’s one word that characterizes their marriage.

“Fun. We have a wonderful time together. Never went to bed mad. If we had an argument, we’d kiss and make up and always went to sleep happy,” said George.

The ceremony concluded with a little bit of dancing.

And, what would a second wedding be without some wedding cake.

Watertown Holds The Line On New Hires

May 14, 2008

budget.jpgThe city of Watertown says ‘no’ to new positions in the coming year.

That means no extra employees working for the city in any department.

It was a decision made by council members this week to take control of how much spending happens in the proposed 2008-2009 budget.

However, it doesn’t look like the decision will affect much.

The only new position proposed was a second school resource officer, which was denied by the council Monday night.

City Manager Mary Corriveau says the decision comes down to cost.

“The council is very cognizant of what’s happening in the economy. What they’re trying to to is mitigate the impact to the taxpayers and they’re also looking at the long term perspective,” said Corriveau.

She also said this does not mean no new hires when it comes to future budgets.

Corriveau said those decisions will be made at the time department heads ask for more staff.

Bulldozer Fatality Ruled Accidental

May 14, 2008

State police said Wednesday that the autopsy on James Eastman showed no signs of a medical condition that could have caused the bulldozer accident that claimed his life.

Police ruled the death of the 64 year old Mannsville man as accidental.

The accident happened at approximately 10 a.m. Monday at Hanson Quarry on State Route 3 near Water Street in the town of Pamelia.

Police said Eastman was operating a 1985 John Deere 750b bulldozer. He was building a roadway from a 75 foot elevation.

According to police, Eastman was pushing material down the partially constructed ramp when the bulldozer went past the point of the filled material and fell eight feet.

Eastman was partially ejected and run over by the left track, police said.

The bulldozer continued to travel another 250 feet and pushed through construction debris before stopping at the base of a large tree.

Eastman was dead at the scene when medical personnel arrived.

State Lawmakers Hoping to Solve Nursing Crisis in the North Country

May 14, 2008

New York State is facing a nursing crisis that has many North Country lawmakers looking for any opportunity to encourage those who are entering the nursing field to stay in the state.

There is legislation currently being considered to direct SUNY and CUNY schools to pay for someone’s education if they are entering the nursing profession and will stay and practice in New York.

“By providing a competitive climate, we will be able to stop the out-flux of nurses and improve the performance of hospitals and health care centers across the state,” Assemblywoman Scozzafava said.

There is an effort by Albany lawmakers, including Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, to offer incentive money to registered nurses who are willing to work in areas of real need for registered nurses.

A report conducted by the state suggests that there could be a shortage of 37,000 nurses by the year 2015.

Carthage Residents Demanding a Change in the School Budget…Again

May 14, 2008

Frustrated, confused and furious.

crowd2.jpgThat’s what the majority of the crowd felt at the Carthage School Board meeting last night as Carthage residents came out to voice their opinion on the Carthage Central School budget.

The school board had previously met with village officials and other lawmakers from around the area to discuss what could be done about cutting the budget back.

Originally the tax increase was 9.8 percent and was dropped to just under 7 percent after that closed door meeting.

The school board also agreed to keep special education teachers and programs at the request of Justin LaJoie, who had been circulating a petition to prevent cuts to special education.

However, according to the residents of Carthage, something has got to give.

“You are absolutely insane…what gives you the authority to keep spending money on things while my tax increase in at 6.8,” one audience member said to the Carthage School Board.

His comments were met with applause.

Most who attended said that the budget was too top heavy, asking that more administrative costs be cut from the budget.

Superintendent Carl Militello said that two administrative positions had already been eliminated, as well as a Fort Drum liasion and an assistant principal.

carl.jpg“We’ve been doing our job and that’s part of what we do to provide a quality education and we will continue to do that after the vote because obviously the process of education goes on,” he said.

The budget goes to vote Tuesday, May 20 and no one is sure what the outcome will be.

Murderer’s Guilty Plea Will Stand

May 13, 2008

bodah2.jpgConvicted killer Michael Bodah will not be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea in the death of his ex-wife.

Bodah had challenged his conviction on the grounds that his public defender allegedly gave him incorrect advice when he accepted a plea bargain for second-degree murder.

In a four page decision, Judge Jerry Richards denied Bodah’s request to vacate his plea.

The judge’s ruling said Bodah “failed to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that his plea was not knowingly and voluntarily entered.”

Ouch! Gas Hits $4 Mark

May 13, 2008

gas.jpgIt was just a matter of time before it happened.

The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline hit the $4 mark at a full-service gas station in Jefferson County Tuesday.

At Chris’s Service Station in the village of Clayton, gas costs $4.02.

Owner Chris Rhinebeck says he purchased the fuel at $3.85 per gallon and has numerous expenses to make ends meet.

He wants customers know he’s not gouging them at the pump.

“If they actually saw our costs, our facts of what we have to pay for the product, they would know that’s not the case,” said Rhinebeck.

On Monday, regular unleaded fuel cost $3.89 a gallon.

Rhinebeck said his competitors offer cheaper gas, but he’s able to keep customers who’ll pay the extra cost for full-service, which his rivals don’t offer.

At the same time, he realizes the price at the pump is tough to take.

“The price affects everybody from the 16 year old kid that just got his license to the 80 year old lady that is on Social Security. It hurts everybody,” said Rhinebeck.

He said he charges about 20 cents more than what it costs him to buy a gallon of gas just to make a profit.

Former Mill Catches Fire…Again

May 13, 2008

fire1.jpgOver the past few years, it has become known as a place prone to fires.

Tuesday afternoon, crews were called out to the former Champion Mill in Deferiet again.

Fire officials said the blaze started as crews were working to demolish the building.

It’s unknown what exactly sparked the blaze.

The property has earned a reputation for being prone to this sort of emergency.

Over the past three years, the former mill has caught fire four or five times.

“That’s a problem that we’re looking into at this point. We’re trying to find out legal obligations. There’s federal situations involved with OSHA as well as some village ordinances and county possibly, but we’re not real sure at this time that that’s being pursued,” said Joe Plummer of Jefferson County Emergency Management.

No one was hurt in the fire.

County officials are still investigating.
