Helen C. Crane, 95, Watertown

Helen C. Crane, 95, of 113 W. Main St., Hilltop Towers, died Saturday evening at her home.

Mrs. Crane, a native of Rochester, was a secretary for the S. E. Hoffman Company in Penfield for many years. She had previously worked at various department stores in the Rochester area.

She was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Rochester, daughter of James and Sally Carroll.

She married Lester Crane June 28, 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Crane lived in Fairport until Mr. Crane’s death on Sept. 5, 1974.  Following his death, Mrs. Crane moved to Ocala, Fla., where she lived for 22 years. She returned to New York living in Palmyra and Manchester before moving to Watertown at age 93.

Mrs. Crane was a life member of the Fairport Volunteer Fire Department’s Women’s Auxiliary and a member of the departments Women’s Auxiliary Marching Unit, and a past president of the New York State Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. She was a foster grandparent in Penfield for many years until moving to Watertown.  She was a member of the Hilltop Towers Tenants Association.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Peter Russell, Davenport, Iowa, Kathleen and Robert Ward, Watertown; three sons and their wives, Roger and Estella, New Braunfels, Texas, James and Sheila, Rochester, and Warren and Sandra, Palmyra; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A sister, Estelle Van Epps, died before her.

Private services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Baird Rd., Penfield. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.

Marjorie A. McCallops, 63, Watertown

Marjorie A. McCallops, 63, formerly of DeGrasse, died Monday at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident since April 1, 2001.

Mrs. McCallops was a certified nurse assistant at the Samaritan for many years.

Born Feb. 12, 1945,  in Russell, daughter of George E. and Florence R. Carrara Colton, she graduated from Know Memorial High School in 1963.

She married Jerry E. McCallops on July 6, 1963, in DeGrasse.

Mrs. McCallops was a volunteer coordinator for WPBS Television in Watertown.

Besides her husband of Watertown, she is survived by two daughters, Lori Knaul, Calif. and Barbara Maitland, Watertown; eight grandchildren, a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Louis Colton, Colo., and Everett Colton, Tenn.; nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Betty Anselm and Gladys Sayer and a brother, George Jr., in infancy, died before her.

The funeral will 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Great Bend following cremation. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the 2nd Floor Residents Fund at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home.

Lynn E. Pickens, 60, Carthage

Lynn E. Pickens, 60, died April 19 at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mrs. Pickens had been ill for the past year.

She was a language teacher for 20 years in Letchworth and Livonia high schools, near Rochester. She later was a tutor for bilingual education for many years.

Born Sept. 27, 1947, in Carthage, daughter of Francis and Marjorie Squairs Rancier, she graduated in 1965 from Carthage Central School as salutatorian. She later graduated from Houghton College, Batavia.

She married Gerald Pickens in 1992. A previous marriage ended in divorce.

Mrs. Pickens enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading and her cats.

She spent much of her early life attending First Baptist Church Sunday school, attending youth groups and performing in the choir.

Surviving besides her husband are her mother, of Carthage; a brother, Terry Rancier, Stormville; two stepsons, Scott Pickens, Alexandria, Va., and Kent Pickens, Caledonia; and three nephews.

Her father died in 1983.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 18, at First Baptist Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Robert Barone, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Castorland.

Robert B. Wood, 64, Watertown

Robert B. Wood, 64, a resident of Mercy of Northern New York for two years, died Wednesday morning at Samaritan Medical Center.

Mr. Wood worked for the postal service for a few years and was a farm worker for most of his working life until retiring due to ill health.

Born Dec. 4, 1944, in Watertown, son of Bruce and Mae Wood, he attended local schools.

He married Christine Marie Prow on May 26, 1981. Two previous marriages ended in divorce.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Jean Martin, Watertown, Christina Wood and her companion, Michael Smith, Watertown, Dorthea Rose LaSalle, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sons, Bruce, Watertown, and Robert, Redwood; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Murray, pastor of Holy Family Church, officiating. Burial will be private following cremation.  Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Friday  at the funeral home.

Ronald W. Dillon Sr., 59, Clayton

The funeral for Mr. Ronald W. Dillon Sr. will be Friday at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of the Thousand Isles with the Reverend James Lewis pastor officiating. Burial with military honors provided by Fort Drum will be in Clayton Cemetery.

Mr. Dillon died Wednesday afternoon at Samaritan Medical Center where he had been a patient since April 15th.

At the time of his death Mr. Dillon worked at Westelcom in Watertown for ten years. Previous to that he was the owner and operator of Clayton Bowling Center from 1991 to 1998.

dillon.JPGHe was born November 14th 1948 in Omaha NE. the son of James and Cora Yates Dillon. He graduated from Plattsmouth High School in NE. He graduated in 1980 from the University of Maryland, with an associate’s degree in business management.

He joined the United States Army in 1970 and was honorably discharged December 31st 1991 at the rank of Master Sergeant.

Having served overseas for eleven of the twenty-one years, he received various accommodations and medals.

He enjoyed computers and bowling.

He married the former Mary Day October 30th, 1974 in South Carolina.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons Ronald Jr. of Belleview NE, Kenneth of Clayton, two daughters and one son-in-law Linda Schroeder of Cape Vincent and Elaine and David Foster of Clayton. Nine grandchildren, three brothers Paul of Watertown South Dakota, Doug of Plattsmouth NE, and Jack of Kansas City Kansas. Two sisters Ruby Schmidt of Omaha NE and Zella Block of Plattsmouth NE. Nieces and nephews. One brother Roy predeceased him.

Spring Burial Scheduled for Harry D. Atkinson

Harry D. Atkinson, 87, formerly of Chestnut Street, died April 9, 2008 at the Samaritan Keep Home.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Rutland on Sat. June 14 at 2pm with Reverend Bruce Smith officiating.

James C. Eastman, 64, Mannsville

James C. Eastman 64, of 111 Lilac Park Drive, died Monday morning in an industrial accident at the Hanson Quarry on Route 3 in the town of Pamelia.

The funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Born Aug. 27, 1943, in Watertown, son of Charles and Edith Chrisman, Eastman, he attended Belleville Central School. He worked on his father’s dairy farm for a few years.

He was a heavy equipment operator for Eastman Corporation in Ellisburg for twelve years, worked for Tug Hill Construction of Watertown for twenty five years, and other construction companies retiring in 2007. At the time of his death, he was working part time with Morgan Williams Construction in Belleville.

He married his companion of twenty six years, Loretta Miller Mesler, on March 7, 2008. Two previous marriages ended in divorce.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Jamie and his fiancée Diane Miller, Mannsville, Ralph, Ellisburg, and Russell and Michele, Belleville; a daughter, Kimberly and her fiancé, Chris Lee, Pulaski; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Tammy and Miles Forbes, Buffalo, Tina and Ronald Majerus, Mexico, and Terri and Perry Phillips, Pierrepont Manor; a stepson and his wife, Todd and Jessica Mesler, Mannsville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor and Willis Green, Belleville, Beverly Ann Eastman of Ellisburg; nephews, cousins and an aunt.

He enjoyed working in his shop (mancave), watching NASCAR, spending time with his grandson Logan and stepgrandchildren, his morning coffee at the diner with his friends and his work as a heavy equipment operator.

Leigh E. Andrews, 79, Watertown and Sackets Harbor

 Leigh E. Andrews, 79, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Watertown and Sackets Harbor, died Monday, May 12, at his home.

A memorial service and Masonic service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 30, at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown, with Rev. Beverly Bibbins, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery at the family’s convenience.

Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Sarasota County, 2331 15th Street, Sarasota, FL 34237.

Arrangements in Florida were with Jennings Funeral Home, Sarasota, Fla.

Born March 3, 1929, the son of Charles E and Thelma LeRoy Andrews, he graduated from Fulton High School and earned his bachelor of science degree from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master of education degree from St. Lawrence University. He obtained New York State certification in school counseling and public school administration. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954.

He married Betty R. Green on Aug. 29, 1959, at Emmanuel Congregational Church, Watertown, with Rev. Walton D. Moffitt, officiating.

After teaching in Adams and Dryden, he and his wife moved to Watertown, where he was employed as a school counselor and later as administrator at North Junior High School and South Junior High School. Upon his retirement in 1985, he was vice-principal at Watertown High School.

Following retirement, he worked as coordinator for the Cooperative Boards of the Tug Hill Council and was also supervisor and assessor in the town of Boylston until 1996.

Mr. Andrews was past president of the Watertown Teachers Association, and served on the board of directors of Hospice of Jefferson County, Inc. and had been an active member of the Rodman Masonic Lodge.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sarasota, Sarasota Masonic Lodge Number 147, Sahib Shrine, Stephens Ministry and the Ringling Museum Association.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Jonathan L. Andrews, Richmond Heights, Mo.; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Shirley Andrews, Cleveland, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

The couple has resided in Sarasota since 2000.  

Virginia S. Volovic, 93, Lowville and Watertown

Virginia S. Volovic, 93, formerly of Lowville and Watertown, died July 15, 2007 at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL.

Mrs. Volovic was born April 21, 1914 in Schenectady, NY a daughter of Louis and Rose Spadaro Cassella.

She graduated from Nott Terrace High School and attended Union College both in Schenectady. She moved to Lowville in 1943.

During World War II she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross in Lowville where she met Dr. Gregori O. Volovic.

Dr. Volovic was born in Orengrod, Russia and came to the United States as a young man.

He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, and joined the staff of the Lewis County General Hospital in 1917.

The couple married and were members of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lowville.

Dr. Volovic operated his medical practice until his death in 1963.

The following year, Mrs. Volovic moved to Watertown.

While living in upstate New York, Mrs. Volovic was a dedicated volunteer at local hospitals.

She later moved to McLean, VA and volunteered at the Georgetown University Hospital.

In 1977 she moved to Ormond Beach, FL where she volunteered at the Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach, and enjoyed boating, photography and traveling.

Surviving are four daughters and two sons in law; Patricia Minotti, Bradenton, FL, Linda and Dr. William Kuhn, Ormond Beach, FL, Shelley and Ernie Garlem, Kalispell, MT, Grisha Taylor, New Smyrna Beach, FL, a niece Mrs. Roland (Rosemary) Faulkner Jr., Niskayuna, NY, seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. A sister Anna C. DeRocher died before her.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday June 14, 2008 at Brookside Cemetery with Reverend Ed Murphy, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lowville, officiating.

Contributions may be made to a Hospice of one’s choice. Arrangements are with D.L.Calarco Funeral Home, Inc.

EDUCATION: She graduated from DeKalb High School in 1932,  she then graduated from Canton College in 1935 with a degree in food service management

MARRIAGE: she married Howard J. Whitmore on August 19, 1957 at the United Methodist Church in Canton, NY, he died on March 3, 1982

ARMED SERVICE: OCCUPATION: she worked for St. Lawrence University in food service for 11 years before she retired in 1971, previous to that she worked in food service for SUNY Canton and Ellis Hospital in Schenectady

MEMBERSHIP  she was a member of DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizens Club and the DeKalb United Methodist Church, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting, she made many items for the Canton VFW and local bazaars
