It’s Great For The Hunters
November 20, 2008
I have a friend who is thrilled with this weather. He deer hunts and has been waiting for colder temps and a little snow. I’m happy he’s happy. Now my wife is another story. She is trying to keep the heat bill down and this cold stuff isn’t helping. It just goes to show ya…someone is always going to be unhappy no matter what the weather.
The upper level low over Quebec responsible for our cold, unsettled weather doesn’t pull off anytime soon so no big changes through the weekend and only slightly warmer next week. I don’t see any big snows for us in the near future. Our friends in Oswego, Rochester and vicinity may not be so lucky. With winds from the north and northwest, there likely will be multiple bands of Lake Effect Snow south of the Lake but could skim Syracuse as well, Friday to Sunday morning.

Isn’t It Too Cool Too Soon?
November 19, 2008
A question I’ve been asked a lot lately. Yes, it is too cool too soon. It’s not unusual to take a temperature plunge for a day or two this time of the year but it is unusual to stay this cool this long. However, it’s not record setting. Normal high: 43. Normal low: 29. We are off by about 10 degrees on both ends.
An Alberta Clipper races through the area Thursday morning and it will bring clouds to all and light snow to some. The center of the low and the best upper level dynamics reside to our west and south so we will get skimmed by this little fellow. Probably no more than an inch accumulation and most areas, like St. Lawrence County and points north, may not even see a dusting.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday stay below normal temperature-wise but I don’t see much snow…a few light snow showers possible through the weekend and that’s about it. However, if you are headed toward Oswego or Rochester, Friday night and Saturday will be yucky for travel. The parameters for Lake Effect Snow are lining up nicely and with a northerly wind, south side of the Lake will be the target.

Missed It By THAT Much!
November 17, 2008
It was kind of a close call but most of us dodged this lake effect event by a few dozen miles. With winds WNW the lake snows fell mostly in southern Lewis County and farther south. Here are some snow estimates from our WeatherSpotters: Constableville 33 inches, West Leyden 28 inches, Lyons Falls 24 inches and Barnes Corners only 3 inches.
The rest of the week looks to be cooler than average and unsettled. There is a big upper level low sitting to our Northeast and continues to spin down very cool air, and spokes of low pressure every now and then. I don’t expect us to break the mid 30’s for highs all week and the lows could drop to the mid to upper teens a couple of nights. In terms of precipitation I don’t see anything major right now, just a few snow showers or flurries now and then but stay tuned…conditions could line up again for some lake effect.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
November 14, 2008
It’s what weather is all about…especially in the North Country. Friday was a fantastic day with low 60’s for highs and a mix of clouds and sun. I mulched my last leaf Friday and got the snowblower lubed and filled with gas. I’m ready. Are you?
Saturday will start pretty mild with highs around 55 but temps will fall steadily through the afternoon. Rain will overspread the area in the morning and could be heavy at times. Models suggest 1/2″ to 1″ of rain by evening. Saturday night the changes will kick in…big time. We will drop to around the freezing mark and rain will turn to snow showers. Sunday will be windy with rain and snow showers and a high only around 39. BTW, that’s about 7 degrees below normal. Sunday night we could start to see lake effect in Jeff/Lewis. The Tug Hill will be the likely spot for higher accumulations but the entire area could see at least some accumulation from general snowfall. Tune in to John Kubis 6pm Sunday on 7News for an update.
Next week looks to be cold and unsettled with chances for snow every day. Highs all week probably won’t budge above 35. A far cry from the 63 degrees I’m enjoying while writing this. (sigh)

Friday On My Mind
November 13, 2008
Friday won’t be a picture perfect day but with near 60 degree temps, who’s complaining? A little high pressure system is trying to wedge between two storm systems flanking the North Country. Will it be the “Little System That Could” and bring us sunshine? Maybe a little. There’s a lot of low-level moisture in place and plenty of debris clouds on the fringes of those two storm systems but I think we’ve got a shot at some sun between the clouds. Winds will kick up from the south at up to 25 mph but with highs in the upper 50’s…it won’t be a raw breeze.
Saturday will start mild but a sharp cold front will sweep through and temps will fall from an early high of 55. Rain Showers are a lock for Saturday…by nighttime, we should see a mix of rain and snow showers as temps bottom out in the low to mid 30’s.
Sunday looks to be cool and cloudy with highs around 38 and a few rain or snow showers.
From Sunday night through mid-week next week it will be cooler than normal with general snowfall possible and Lake Effect Snow likely. It’s too soon to be more specific than that so stay tuned!

Umbrella, Anyone?
November 12, 2008
Umbrella EVERYONE! A slow moving system is headed to the North Country. It will usher in a steady rain Thursday, scattered showers Friday, and gusty winds both days. We will have mild temps, though. Thursday we should be near 50 and Friday we’ll be very close to 60. Then the backside of the system will sweep through a cold front Saturday. Expect rain showers during the day Saturday and rain or snow showers Saturday night. Saturday will start mild with highs in the upper 40’s then end up in the low 30’s by nightfall. Sunday will be cloudy with rain or snow showers with a high around 42.
Next week will be cooler than normal, mostly cloudy, and with some lake effect snow returning during the first half of the week.

How About A Nice Day? Wednesday Is The Best Bet
November 11, 2008
We have high pressure in the vicinity Wednesday but it will be a dirty high. That means we still will have some clouds around. There is a lot of low level moisture that will be trapped under an inversion and that should keep us partly sunny instead of mostly sunny. Additionally, warm air advection in the afternoon will bring in some high cirrus clouds. Temps Wednesday should be in the low to mid 40’s.
Thursday will bring us average temperatures in the upper 40’s and a lot of clouds, wind and rain as a warm front approaches. Friday should be much the same but a little warmer with highs in the mid 50’s.
Saturday looks wet, as well. Expect showers and a high around 52. Late Saturday into Sunday morning a cold front sweeps through the North Country. Rain and/or snow showers are likely through the period. The low Saturday night will be in the mid 30’s and the high Sunday about 42.
A sneak peek into next week shows below average temps with snow showers likely for the first half of the week…subject to change, of course.

Nothing Like Last Week!
November 10, 2008
A week ago we were basking in 60 degree temps…this week, not so much. A cold cyclonic flow from a low in Quebec continues to spin down some cold air that sweeps across the relatively warm waters of Lake Ontario. That’s the first ingredient for Lake Effect Snow. Temps are still marginal for heavy accumulation except in the higher elevations like Tug Hill. Off the hill, a trace to a couple of inches possible by Tuesday morning. On the hill, you will be in the range of 6 inches to even a foot in places. Most of the larger accumulations will be in the extreme south end of Jeff and Lewis.
For Veterans Day expect it to be mostly cloudy and blustery with a few scattered snow showers well south of Watertown. By Wednesday expect some sunshine but still cooler than normal temps in the low 40’s.

It’s Over…But Wasn’t It Nice?
November 7, 2008
The 20 degrees above normal weather is history. I finished my outside tasks, I hope you did, too. I even got a chance to hop on the motorcycle for a fall cruise around parts of Lake Ontario and along the St. Lawrence River. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful ride. As much as the long winter can get me down, a ride like that reminds me of why I live here. Now it’s time to get back to reality.
A potent cold front swings through the North Country overnight Friday and into Saturday morning. Lots of clouds accompany it and a few showers as well. It will be pretty breezy with winds from the southwest gusting up to 25 mph on Saturday. We may see the showers become widely scattered by Saturday afternoon. I don’t think we will see much in the way of sun Saturday afternoon…maybe a peak or two, that’s about it. Saturday night we stay mostly cloudy and breezy with a shower possible. Sunday is a tough call. An upper low will keep us generally unsettled but we have a chance of some dry weather Sunday afternoon. A dry slot develops and we could see limited sun for a while Sunday but still a few showers are possible. It will be pretty breezy as well with southwesterly gusts up to 25 mph.
Next week: It looks unsettled most of the week with highs within a few degrees of 45. I don’t see any big storms but we have the chance for some snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.
BTW, Tuesday is Veterans Day…don’t forget to say thanks!

I Love The 70’s!
November 6, 2008
Early afternoon Thursday we reached a high of 70 degrees at the Watertown Airport in Dexter. That’s 21 degrees above our average high for November 6th. Not a record high, though. The all-time high for 11/6 is 73 degrees set in 1948. One more beauty coming on Friday when we should have partly sunny skies and hit the low to mid 60’s.
A large low pressure system with it’s associated cold front will sweep in early Saturday morning. This will bring a big change to the North Country. Saturday will be breezy with on-and-off showers and an early high in the upper 50’s. The temps will drop through the afternoon and eventually end up with a low near freezing Saturday night. Sunday will have clouds and limited sunshine with a few showers possible. The high will only be around 48.
Cooler temperatures will be the rule next week. We also have the chance for a few wet snow showers Sunday night, Monday night and Tuesday night. Take a look at my five day forecast for additional info.
